Unlocking the secrets to Amazon's profitability

ROAS is one of the first metrics Amazon teams look at when evaluating advertising performance. It is useful, familiar, and easy to compare.
But it does not tell the whole story.
A campaign can generate a strong return on ad spend while the product behind it is becoming less profitable. Advertising can increase sales while inventory coverage gets tighter. A product can convert well but still create weak margin after fees, refunds, and other costs.

The better question is not simply:

How much revenue did advertising generate?

It is:

What did that advertising activity contribute to the wider business?

ROAS is useful, but it is only one layer

ROAS helps teams understand how much attributed revenue is being generated relative to advertising spend.
That makes it valuable for evaluating campaign efficiency.
However, advertising performance does not exist separately from the rest of the Amazon operation.

A campaign may look successful in isolation while:

  • Product margin is falling

  • Advertising costs are increasing faster than revenue

  • Stock is running low

  • Returns are increasing

  • Organic sales are weakening

  • Overall account profitability is declining

Looking at these signals together creates a much more useful picture.

Advertising performance becomes more meaningful when spend and attributed sales are viewed alongside wider commercial metrics.

Add profitability to the advertising conversation

One of the biggest limitations of looking only at advertising metrics is that they do not automatically tell you whether the resulting sales are profitable.

Imagine two products.

Product A

  • Strong ROAS

  • High Amazon fees

  • Heavy discounting

  • High return rate

  • Weak margin

Product B

  • Slightly lower ROAS

  • Better product margin

  • Lower returns

  • Stronger net profit

If the team looks only at ROAS, Product A may appear to be the better place to invest.
Once profitability is added to the analysis, the decision may change.

The best-performing campaign is not always the campaign creating the most commercial value.

Product-level profitability matters

Account-level performance can hide important differences between products.
Some products may contribute heavily to revenue but deliver very little profit. Others may have lower sales volume while producing stronger margins.

Product-level analysis can help teams understand:

  • Which SKUs are actually profitable

  • Where costs are increasing

  • Which products deserve more investment

  • Which products need pricing or advertising adjustments

  • Where margin leakage is occurring

This makes it easier to prioritize decisions based on commercial impact rather than sales volume alone.
